Pop culture references in HellMOO

There's a lot of stuff in HellMOO that's pulled from other sources, as either homages or just references. This page is an attempt to figure out all of them.

1984

There are Anti-Sex flyers scattered around the world, possibly referring to the Anti-Sex organization in George Orwell's novel. There are also red Anti-Sex League sashes that are worn by the females of the outer party, as well. Not to mention "Victory Gin". You can also buy "Big Brother is watching you" stickers from the Sticker-O-Rama machine.

Alien

The Weyland-Utani corporation that runs corpclave is named after the megacorp in Alien, Weyland Yutani. The chest bursters that abominations produce are from the series, born when face huggers implant eggs in the victim orally. "You've seen Aliens" and "You've seen Aliens twice" are also blurbs for levels of skill in Rifle.

Apple Computers

The iterative loop in Corpclave is a reference to "Infinite Loop" the street where Apple headquarters is located in Cupertino, California.

The Big Lebowski

The man working at Ammu-Nation is based on and named after Walter Sobchak, the angry war veteran in the movie. Donny, the man who runs the mod store above it is also from this movie.

Blade Runner

Although the Bradbury is a real building, the version in HellMOO is based on the cyberpunk rendition of it in Blade Runner.

The Blade Trilogy

Blade is one of the many vampire hunters that wander Slagtown.

Borderlands

A.J. in Simon & Simon Aircraft will spout "This is where the planes live! Get you one!" This mirrors a phrase said by scooter, the mechanic in Borderlands who provides vehicles. "This is where the cars live! Get you one!"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

She's also a slagtown vampire hunter.

Carrie

A mutation that allows you to light stuff on fire, just like the main character of the book.

Castlevania

The major vampire hunter, Tyrone Belmont, takes his last name from the group of protagonists in this videogame series. He even rambles on about Richter Belmont defeating Dracula, which is a major part of the plot in the game "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night." On top of that, he carries around the Vampire Killer, which is the whip used in the games. Also, having a high whip skill (of around 20 total) will state "Simon Belmont" in the score menu.

C.H.U.D.

The sewers are occupied by monsters based on the titular creatures from the movie.

The Church of Scientology

The SpaceOrg building is based on the SeaOrg branch of the controversial church of scientology. Also, One of the NPCs inside, L. Ron Hubbard, is a direct reference to the church's founder of same name.

Conan the Barbarian

If a Male player attempts to fuck a creature while mid-coitus with another creature, they are given the message "Woah, slow down Conan! You're already fucking <name>"

CSI: Miami

Horatio Caine wanders Freedom City, looking for crimes to spout witty oneliners about; he even carries his trademark Sunglasses of Justice.

Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986)

This is where Nukem comes from, the pregant teens, the punks and the nerdlings.

The Dark Tower

The enormous mutated lobsters that crawl onto North Beach at night are based on the lobstrosities of The Drawing of the Three (Book II of the series). The vampire hunter Callahan is named after Father Callahan of Books V-VII, who originally appeared in 'Salem's Lot.

Dead Rising

The NPC Frank West is based off of the main character of this game, and even carries around his camera. The mall full of zombies comes from the game as well.

Discipline and Punish

Panopticon Prison's design (like that of several real world prisons) is based on Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon, described in this book by Michel Foucault.

Dune

In the Sea of Dunes sandworms lurk, and you can butcher teeth from them which will eventually be able to be made into Crysknives. Stillsuits are also in development.

Fallout

The Necropolis area is possibly named after a similar area from this game. The radscorpions of the Wasteland are also from this game. You can find Nuka Cola bottles in Care Dog's fridge in Any Port sometimes, as well.

Family Guy

Family Guy asian news reporter Tricia Takanawa does news reports for FCIN.

The NPC Miguel (named after the website's creator) wanders around spouting quotes from this site.

Fight Club

There's a fight club in the Panopticon and you fight some of the characters from the book. Also, occasionally when having sex with NPCs, they will say "I haven't been fucked like this since grade school", which is a line from the movie.

Firefly/Serenity

There is an Oaty Bar vending machine in Freedom City. Also, one of the possible responses to playing with a dinosaur toy is "<name> causes his/her dinosaur toy to stomp around and says, 'Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'"

The Fly (1986)

In the item 'lab logbook' (when read the title is something to the effect of 'MY AWESOME EXPERIMENTS'), the (presumed) child who wrote it speaks of combining chuds and sewer bugs in telepods, an allusion to what happens to the main character in The Fly. They also state that they will call their creation the 'Brundlechud,' an obvious reference to Seth Brundle, AKA 'Brundlefly,' the main character/protagonist-turned-antagonist of the movie.

Futurama

On December 25 in-game, if you use the time command causes an additional message to appear announcing: "Oh hey -- it's Xmas day. Something about giving gifts and hiding in a bunker from the rampages of Robot Santa.". In the show, Robot Santa kills you on Xmas day(not Christmas) if you've been naughty, hence, hiding in a bunker.

Additionally, the suicide booth in the street in front of the orphanage is inspired by the first episode of the show.

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai

He lives in Gangland, and even has his pigeons.

Ghostbusters

CSICOP, the ghost hunting place in Slagtown, takes most of its influence from this movie, as they sell Proton Packs, Ghost Traps, and jumpsuits bearing the familiar logo.

Grand Theft Auto Series

The weapon store Ammu-Nation is named after the gun stores commonly seen in the games. Brucie from Brucie's gym in corpclave and the Vice City shop in Freedom City are references to a character and a game of the GTA series, respectively.

Grave of the Fireflies

Located in southwesternmost Slagtown, this area is named for Grave of the Fireflies, a 1988 animated Japanese movie about the American firebombing of Kobe towards the end of World War II.

H.P. Lovecraft

Shoggoth spawn exist out in Lurleen, and they're the same horrible mass of eyes, mouths and tentacles as the shoggoths in Lovecraft's work. There is also a Shoggoth under the orphanage. Also, the admin Dagon gets its name from the eponymous tale. There is also an awesome painting of Cthulu to be seen on shipwreck cove.

Half-Life

Scientists can produce an HEV Suit, like the one Gordon Freeman wears. (Club users can also swing crowbars around.)

Hellboy

Hellboy himself wanders the necropolis, you can kill him and take his Samaritan.

House Of Leaves

In the Necropolis there is an area named after this book, it also features the Minotaur.

I Am Legend

The vampire hunter Neville is named after the main character in this book.

Ice T

Using the command scam me causes the game to recite the last verse from his song "You Played Yourself".

Idiocracy

The hospital in Slagtown is named St. God's Memorial, and contains Dr. Lexus's office.

Imajica

The Nullianac NPCs are based are from this Clive Barker novel.

Jerkcity

There is a Jerkcity Dream that takes place Under The Sink.

Karate Kid

A score of 15 in fists grants the title "Karate Kid".

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

Excerpts from this poem by T.S. Eliot can be found in the room descriptions of the North Beach.

The Matrix

You can "jack in" to the internet.

Michael Jackson

His song "Thriller" is referenced in the kill journal text for killing a zombie.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Haruhi and Mikuru, two characters from the series, are nurses in St. God's Memorial Hospital. Killing one of them awards the 'slaughtered a hentai nurse' award worth 24 XP.

Monster Hunter

The pistol hammer, a crafted hammer with a pistol grafted unto a hammer, is most likely a reference to the gun hammers of the hunters.

Orgazmo

This 1998 film featured the orgazmorator, an item that caused an orgasm in anyone hit by a shot from it. The orgazmorator is craftable in this game.

The Police

The 'whore' achievement's description is a reference to the song 'Roxanne' by The Police.

Portal

Scientists can create a Portalgun, and works like it does in the game.

The Princess Bride

A blade score of 22 comes with the title "Inigo Montoya".

Pulp Fiction

You can find Samuel L. Jackson's wallet. It's the one that says 'Bad Motha Fucka'! The journal description for 'freakbane' also includes part of the quote from the character Butch in this movie. The interceptor job might be a reference to the characters of Vega and Winnfield's task to retrieve the briefcase for Mr. Wallace. (The courier always spawn with a Gangland friend, for example.)

The Punisher

He lives in Slagtown and comes out to hunt people that kill newbies.

Punch-Out

Some of the fighters you battle in hand to hand combat in the Panopticon are named after fighters in this game.

Raffi

His song "Bananaphone" plays in your head if you wank while already wanking and break your dick. Also, a disease from prank phone calls. (Confirmation needed)

Rambo

Attempting to powerattack while not in combat gives the message: "You're not attacking anything, Rambo. Relax.".

Saving Private Ryan

One of the skill levels of Rifle comes with the blurb "Private Ryan".

Sealab 2021

The soda machines you can deploy are Bebop Cola brand, and you can tip them over onto yourself, trapping you. The Sealab itself is also an area in the game. There are also Stimutacs you can buy that makes you stronger, but you have to leave room for Marduk, Slayer of Tiamat.

Silent Hill

Birchwood Heights is based off the movie and games. The thick fog that obscures Silent Hill is incorporated into the small town. Rompers are also a monster in one of the Silent Hill games. Alessa and Dahlia Gillespie make appearances.

SLA Industries

Necanthrope, one of the main admins, is named after and takes his appearance from one of the creatures in this RPG.

Snow Crash

The pizza place in Freedom City is named after the one Hiro worked at. Cosa Nostra Pizza, said pizza place also utilizes Deliverators. Burbclave and Corpclave seem to be named after the suburban areas in the book. Dentatas exist in hellmoo, and have the same effect as the dentata in the book.

The Stainless Steel Rat

The porcuswine enemies come from this book.

StarCraft

The mineral harvester in the Panopticon Prison occasionally says "WE REQUIRE MORE MINERALS", a quote used by the Protoss race, who use robotic probes to collect resources.

Subgenius

There are many references to "Bob": pictures, pamphlets, and an NPC bears his likeness, plus a TV channel dedicated to slack. Care Dog is named after a character from Subgenius material.

There Will Come Soft Rains

The house from this short story by Ray Bradbury stands southeast of the wasteland.

Usagi Yojimbo

He wanders the necropolis, and drops a powerful sword.

Team Fortress 2

Scientist can create a Medigun, used by the medic class in TF2. Also, when a player picks up or holds a repair toolbox, they will automatically shout various random Engineer quotes, such as "Erectin' a dispenser!" and "Sentry down!".

Fonzie

Upon replugging/repairing/thumping the jukebox at AnyPort for the first time, a character will recieve the "Fonzie" journal, which is a reference to one of the main characters from the american sitcom "Happy Days".

William Gibson cyberpunk series

Maas_Neotek William Gibson burst upon the scene in 1984 with Neuromancer, a revolutionary, innovative novel that not only gathered up just about every award in the SF field, but also virtually invented a new sub-genre, which has come to be called "cyberpunk." He followed it with Count Zero, set in the same neon-lit, over-urbanized, polluted, high-tech future; It's a story of a young cyberspace hacker caught in the net of corporate intrigue.

Zork

The powerful grue monsters in the last underground floor of the mine near the mutation snakeskin are references to Zork monsters of the same name. Just like in Zork, grues are very powerful monsters who dwell in the dark and greatly fear light, apparently not attacking if the player is carrying an active source of light (needs confirmation). You can gain the achievement "gruesome" by killing a grue.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

There's an in game porno magazine (often sold at Vice City) called "My Big Fat Greek Cocksucker".
